The Scallop Shell

The scallop shell is named for the fluted edges of the fan shaped shell and, like oysters and clams, is a mollusk with two shells. Interestingly, the scallop is one of the few bivalve shells that can swim freely. By rapidly opening and closing their valves these shells can propel themselves backwards over the ocean floor and escape from predators. There are over 400 species of the Pectenidae family worldwide.
