Cupid was the Roman name for the God of Love. His name in Ancient Greece was Eros... From which we today derive the word "Erotic".
The Thief's Knot

So that everyone will know that your heart has truly been stolen away,
this box has a token of your love on each side.
The Thief's Knot is known only to sailors and your Artist was one for 18 years.
In days of old when sailors lived in very close quarters on
wooden ships they carried around their worldly possession is a "Ditty Bag".
To secure the contents, they would tie a rope around the neck of the bag and
secure it with this knot.
A casual thief would come along and unite the knot to view the contents.
When he went to tie it up again he would use a simple square knot, which this
knot resembles, thinking all would be well.
However, the owner of the bag would know at once that a thief had been visiting.
Spot the difference
A square knot has both tails at the bottom or both tails at
the top and is easy to make.
(not like above where one is at the top and the other comes out at the bottom)
The Sailor goes "right over left and left over right" to construct a Square
Knot, keeping the long ends in his hands as he does so.
Hence the name "Square Knot".
But to make the Thief's Knot one must make one loop first and then feed the
other end through that loop individually and very carefully
so that one tail is at the top and the other at the bottom.
It is quite hard to get it right and particularly hard afterwards to cinch it up
tight.
In the U.K. A Square Knot is known as a Reef Knot.
The "Granny Knot"
Note that this is not the proverbial "Granny Knot ".
That knot has tails like the square knot, both at the top or both at the bottom,
but each tail comes out on the opposite side of it's loop compared to the
standing end. Underneath rather than over. Or vice versa. (Again, not like
above)
It will seize up and become locked if the slightest tension is applied. It is a
useless knot and to be avoided at all costs.
Recommended reading: The Ashley Book of Knots. It contains
some 3854 knots.
Years ago sailors had little else to do but learn rope work.

Virgin Island Fossil Coral Boxes are not painted......
Virgin Island Fossil Coral boxes are not painted — they are made with plain and colored coral. Every box made is unique. First the relief is made and then, afterwards, the base of the lid , tinted with a different color, is added at the same time as the bowl is made. Every box is completely hand made. The technique of the artisan in laying in the relief, the batch of white fossil coral prepared for use, the temperature, the humidity, all affect how the colors and the coral will flow and affect the final result. No two will ever be exactly the same. All our pieces are all individually made. The Coral Studio employs no mass production techniques, only skilled craftspeople.
