R.M.S. Rhone Commemorative Dish
Our R.M.S. Rhone Commemorative Dish shows the vessel using both steam and sail. Made with with writing that stands out so we could clearly define her name and location, our dish also shows her 3 bladed propeller and one of the two Admiralty Pattern (Herreshoff in the USA) anchors she carried. Notice as well the lifeboats carried along the edge of the deck.
The Royal Mail Steam Packet "Rhone" was typical of vessels at that time, as sail gradually gave way to steam. In 1879, trying to escape a tremendous hurricane, she struck the corner of Salt Island in the British Virgin Islands, and sank in about 80 feet of water. Today she is the premier wreck site for divers in the BVI and it is a thrill to view her lying on the bottom covered in marine life. Most divers only get to see her in the daytime but our artist/sculptor was a divemaster for 18 years and led many a group of guests down to experience the extra thrill of dives on the wreck in darkest night.

The technique of the artisan in laying in the colors, the batch of white fossil coral prepared for use, the temperature, the humidity, all affect how the colors will flow. No two will ever be exactly the same. All our pieces are all individually made. The Coral Studio employs no mass production techniques, only skilled craftsmen.
