Sailfish Dish in Virgin Island Fossil Coral
We really enjoyed coming up with the idea of this delightful miniature plate. It’s the traditional shape for accommodating cooked fish and would be just right for Hunca Munca, one of the two mice in Beatrix Potter’s children’s story “The Tale of Two Bad Mice”. She and Tom Thumb got very annoyed when the fish would not come off the plate! Our artist’s delicate bas relief shows well the huge dorsal fin that gives this fish its name.

Sailfish Facts
Sailfish in the Caribbean grow to about 50 pounds weight and 7 feet in length on a diet of smaller pelagic fishes and squid, swimming at up to 50 miles an hour to catch their prey. The females, as with many fishes, grow larger than the males and both sexes may live up to 10 years. The most exotic of the billfish, they are often deep blue on top with lavender blue stripes below.
